SG EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY: BROADWAY MALL | 2020
REPLY TO SCULPTORSGUILD@GMAIL.COM by 10/7/19 | BROADWAY MAll CURRENT PROJECT | BROADWAY MALL GUIDELINES
Sculptors Guild is Broadway Bound
The Exhibition Committee is considering submitting a proposal to the Broadway Mall Association for an outdoor show that would take place, at the earliest, from September, 2020 to March 2021. The Broadway Mall Association is a not-for-profit organization that takes care of the plantings in the median of the street from Columbus Circle to 165th Street. There have been public art exhibitions along it on and off since 2005. Once they approve a proposal it goes to the City Parks Department for final approval.
The usual considerations for public safety and the security of the pieces apply. Pieces need to be securely installed, usually by being bolted to the concrete. While most pieces have been installed in the concrete at the end of a block, they have also been “planted in flower beds.” Work can also be installed mid-block where there are open spaces. Interestingly, they also point out that “the varied configurations of the malls lend themselves to a wide range of sculpture size and weight.”
This project has costs: professional riggers/installers are required as is property and liability insurance naming the Broadway Mall Association as an additional insured. SG will also have to provide the Parks Department a maintenance and restoration bond in the form of a certified check. We might have to all chip in or we might be able to fundraise for this, perhaps with a Kickstarter type of campaign.
What to do:
Reply to this email ASAP saying whether you will be submitting existing work or a proposal.
Send in your images or proposal and your CV by October 7.
Once we get your initial email, we’ll start figuring out what to cost of the project will be. If you know any licensed riggers, please let us know! We’ll also figure out how to get you photos of the mall to figure out siting. And we’ll contact the Broadway Sculpture Mall to find out more about what they expect in a proposal for an exhibition. Also, if you are interested in helping to make this happen, please let us know!
This could be a really great and very visible show!
