Hans Van de Bovenkamp
“Changing, always searching, Hans Van de Bovenkamp is one of the handful of true originals in contemporary sculpture.” - Jerry Bowles
Hans Van de Bovenkamp is a sculptor whose work can be seen in public, civic, corporate, and private collections in various parts of the country. Since 1961, he has been exhibiting all over the world; he has had over 50 one-man shows in addition to taking part in numerous group exhibits.
Van de Bovenkamp has completed over 100 commissions, including monumental sculptures that have become landmarks in parks and plazas. He has collaborated with architects, developers, and city planners, and he takes pride in finishing his work on time and within budget.
Trained as an architect in Holland and the United States, Van de Bovenkamp has the experience to know that the material and construction of a piece, and its permanence, must be an integral part of its design. As an award-winning designer and sculptor, he has earned a reputation for his designs, the artistic merit of his creations, the fine craftsmanship of their fabrication, and the precise engineering and successful installation of sculptures and fountains.
Made of aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and bronze, with textures and patinas that play with light, Van de Bovenkamp’s work continues to intrigue and inspire. At forty feet tall, a sculpture can seem to dance with joy. Perfectly balanced on the earth, they can seem light even if monolithic. Often influenced by sensual organic shapes, his work can provoke discussion of body and spirit and the natural transformation that continues.
As a humanist dedicated to continued education, man and father, Van de Bovenkamp has worked individually and in collaboration to create monumental sculptures, fountains, homes, buildings, and plazas that give beauty to the cities and towns of our country and speak to and for their inhabitants.
“Van de Bovenkamp has created an idyllic sculpture garden and working studio in the foothills of the Catskills. He was a founding member of the highly popular “10 Downtown Artists,” a group who opened their New York City studios to the public in the late 1960s through the late 1970s. His sculpture garden, founded in 1991, is a natural extension of this earlier effort to encourage the public to learn about and appreciate sculpture.”
