ARTIST STATEMENT

"Each of us has an inner spiritual state of being. But we live in the outer world of desires, agitation, conflict and unrest. How does one bridge these two states of being to find a balance, peace, and happiness in this relative world? I wonder about how science, technology and mass media influence and effect our intimacy with each other, the natural world and our spirit.  I spend time dreaming about the unseen forces at play. Using various materials bound together; woven, knitted, welded, sewn–I make site specific interactive installations, public art and sculpture–creating structures that bridge ideas of interconnection beyond our physical understanding. By delving into my ancestry and mythology, I am guided to see the universal connection we have to each other on this spaceship earth.”- T.Lanzisero 2020

Thea Lanzisero, a New York based artist, creates environments and sculpture to weave stories of personal mythology inspired by family histories. Through actions and processes of sewing, planting, weaving, and welding, Thea experiments with conceptual ideas that comment on our interaction with each other and the natural world–our private vs public space. She builds structures that represent a bridge from our physical world to our spiritual center, inviting us to interact and reconnect. Using bamboo, fabric, rope, steel, video, light, repurposed, and recycled objects, Thea chooses materials for each series that add a layered story to her narrative.

Thea Lanzisero has exhibited works in museums, art-parks and other public venues in the US and Europe and has received numerous grants and awards (NYSCA, NYFA SOS, JP Morgan Artist Grants, etc), as well as private and public art commissions. She has permanent outdoor public artwork installed in the Ann Frank Garden at Arboretum Park, Dix Hills NY and on the street in New York City on 38th between 5th and 6th Avenue outside the Archer hotel.

Thea teaches ceramics and sculpture at the City University of New York, Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY and  Borough of Manhattan Community College and is currently the President of the Sculptors Guild, an 80+ year old artist run 501c3 in New York City.
