Let's get physical! Sex, violent encounters and other every day actions are the subject matter for my sculptures of animals, exploring the physical expression of attraction, instinct, and desire. I believe all living things are bound by inherent instincts, an often absurd and unconscious guide for most of our actions and reactions. The life-size sculptures, made from bundles of taped up newspaper, are both a humorous and physical expression of living. Internally constructed from a metal armature, I use newspaper, which often describes how we behave like animals, to build volume. Binding it together with archival tape, I create a three dimensional surface that I draw upon, delineating muscles, patterns, light, and shadows. In my sculptures, the interactions between animals are also metaphors for human sexuality. The mannequin eyes that look identical to mine, make the sexuality personal and anthropomorphic. Through my animal characters, I express the wild and intense feeling of orgasm, as in Fucking Lions, the pleasure of a "quickie" in Screwing Squirrels or the sometime rough play between lovers in Take My Breath Away.
