Molly Mason
Molly Mason, recipient of a Fullbright Research Professorship that allowed her to study the sculptural aspects of the gardens of Japan, has been awarded over 45 other honors for her work. In many of the artist’s luminous, meticulously created works, she creates a sense of a “private”, intimate space within a larger, more “public” environment, whether an urban area, natural landscape, or garden-or an idea of a garden.
Although in her 23+ year career as a professional sculptor she has worked on a significant scale in most major sculptural media, in recent years Mason has concentrated on working in metal, as the strength of the material allows her to create sculpture of strong monumental qualities that is simultaneously nuanced and delicate. Recently, she has been developing permanent, baked-on, transparent color in the work, which allows the “drawing” Mason does to glow through the color.
