Miguel Castillo


Miguel Castillo was born in Roldanillo, Colombia in 1944. He studied Literature and Philosophy at the Universidad del Valle (1963-1965) Then, he embarqued in a career in arts, taking classes of drawing, painting and sculpture at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Cali, Colombia (1970-1976) He acknowledges the influences of Edgar Negret, a modernist colombian sculptor. In 1988, he emigrated to the United States and took classes of painting and sculpture at the Art Students League of New York (1989-1995). His chosen mediums throughout have been stone, wood, metal and plexiglass. His approach to sculpture is based in construction rather than modelling and his late works have becaming architectural and color, geometry and repeated forms have their place in his work. Miguel Castillo has exhibited regularly in groupshows since 1970 and has had a oneman exhibition at the Flywheel Gallery in Piermont NY in 2000. He lives and works in New York.
